If the heat is not dissipated effectively, this can lead to overheating, reduce the service life of the LEDs and ultimately reduce the luminous efficacy. Effective heat management is therefore crucial, especially in closed environments such as indoor grow systems.
An LED heat sink is a component that dissipates heat away from the LED and into the environment. Conventional heat sinks are often made of aluminium or copper, as these materials have a high thermal conductivity. The shape of the heat sink - often with ribs or fins - maximises the surface area, allowing more heat to be dissipated into the surrounding air.
However, conventional heat sinks have limitations: They are rigid in their form and function, which makes it difficult to design modular or flexible systems.
