Thermal Management for FLUXengine LEDs

Thermal Management is crucial when building LED grow lights. The cooler the LEDs, the more efficient the fixture can operate. Additionally, if LED Chips run too hot, they might fail earlier.

FLUXengines offer the advantage to be easily mounted on standard t-slot profiles. Those will be sufficient as a heat sink for most applications. We have always kept the board in acceptable temperature ranges running one FLUXengine at its maximum power (60 W) using 40 x 40 mm aluminum profile. With high power draws, 50° C will be surpassed though, so be careful touching the heatsink!

Connection between heat and expected lifetime

Temperatures of up to 75° C are no problem for LEDs. Their expected lifetime is still rated at over 50.000 hours even at such high temperatures. For horticulture use all year round this means almost 8 years of operation!

Thermal Management in Practice

In order to give you an overview on which thermal management solution suits your application, we have gathered some test data in a case study using various aluminum profiles. You can also use FLUXengines without heatsink, take into account the heat that is generated at different input power levels though. 20 Watts (that means 1 A drive current) might be ok in most environments.

 

For your evaluation you should take a look at our case study to figure out which heatsink can handle which wattages. It will give you an idea what´s best for your setup. Our tests were conducted without any intermediary material, such as thermal glue or paste. Our profiles were 28 cm long which is just slightly longer than the LED engine itself. That means you will be able to achieve better results using thermal paste and longer heatsinks. Have fun planning your FLUXengine setup!
